Extension in stay of Afghans

FOR decades, Pakistan has borne the burden of sheltering Afghan refugees fleeing conflict and instability in their homeland. The extension in their stay for one year by the federal cabinet, although routine in its procedural nature, speaks volumes about Pakistan’s humane approach towards its Afghan neighbours.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) commended Pakistan’s decision, acknowledging it as a significant relief for the refugees. However, amid Pakistan’s continued hospitality, there exists a glaring absence of acknowledgment from the international community and Afghan leadership. This oversight is particularly disheartening given Pakistan’s sustained efforts in supporting Afghan refugees, both in terms of advocacy at international forums and practical assistance on the ground. The Western world, in particular, often preaches humanitarian values but fails to emulate Pakistan’s example of providing safe haven to those in dire need. It is crucial to recognize that hosting Afghan refugees comes at a cost. Pakistan faces economic and security challenges exacerbated by the prolonged stay of refugees. Instances of refugees being involved in criminal and terrorist activities highlight the complexities and strains this hospitality can impose on the host nation. Addressing these issues requires a concerted effort from the international community, particularly in engaging with the Afghan Government to create conditions conducive for the refugees’ safe return. Long-term peace and stability in the region hinges upon international support for Afghanistan’s development. Rather than solely relying on Pakistan to bear the burden of Afghan refugees, there should be a collective effort to empower Afghanistan and enable its people to rebuild their lives in their homeland. This involves diplomatic recognition of the Afghan Government, robust engagement in reconstruction efforts, and the creation of sustainable livelihood opportunities. Simultaneously, recognition of Pakistan’s role as a frontline state in refugee assistance should translate into tangible support mechanisms that alleviate the economic and security burdens it faces.
