The inauguration of Dhi Rani programme by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz marks a significant stride in supporting marginalised communities and a remarkable demonstration of a government working toward alleviating the financial burdens that accompany marriage in many households. With an allocated budget of Rs1 billion, this programme aims to not only ease economic strain on underprivileged families but also offers gifts like household items, furniture and a generous Rs1 lakh wedding money for each couple. The launch of the Dhi Rani Card adds further convenience, enabling newlyweds to access their financial aid with ease.

In a society, where financial constraints often obstruct the dream of marriage, this programme offers hope and relief. For many poor families, a wedding can be a significant burden, requiring resources that simply are not available. By facilitating mass weddings, the government ensures that couples from low-income backgrounds do not have to endure the stress of trying to finance a wedding, allowing them to start their new lives together with dignity. While the Dhi Rani programme is a welcome initiative, there is also a need for complementary policies that help couples sustain themselves beyond their wedding day.

To make a more lasting impact, the government could consider launching additional programmes aimed at empowering newlyweds with skills training, entrepreneurship programmes or financial literacy classes. Helping couples to stand on their own feet by equipping them with tools to start small businesses, pursue vocational training, or secure micro-financing options would provide them with resources to not only survive but also thrive in their new life together. This will increase their chances of success in the long run and break the cycle of poverty.
