Observer Report
A plan has been devised to bring a unanimous administrator after the term of the mayor of Karachi ends. According to reliable sources, delimitation will take place before the next local body elections. A bill will be presented in the Sindh Assembly to bring an empowered mayor.
PTI leader Khurram Sher Zaman has said that Karachi has given us a big mandate, therefore there is a lot of pressure on the federal government. He said the government is ready to give the PPP one last chance and join hands with the Sindh government. If it still does not work, the strict option will be used.
It is pertinent to mention that last month the PTI’s Opposition Leader in the Sindh Assembly, Firdous Shamim Naqvi, has called for imposing the Governor’s rule in the province, expressing frustration over failure of the Sindh government to deliver. The demand was quickly shot down by Sindh government’s Murtaza Wahab and Federal Minister Fawad Ch, who said that was not possible under the Constitution. The opposition in the Sindh Assembly also took a strong exception to the decision of Speaker Agha Siraj Khan Durrani to reschedule the opposition-requisitioned session of the provincial assembly from 20th May to 3rd June, 2020.
Addressing a press conference, along with GDA and other PTI leaders, Naqvi had said that it was better to impose Governor’s rule in the province as the Sindh government had failed to deliver. He said that the Sindh government instead of spending funds for the welfare of people is pocketing them. He said that the Article 235 of the Constitution had empowered the president to impose financial emergency in the country and he must do so protect the province from sliding on the slippery slope.
Earlier a committee on Sunday has been formed under the supervision of Chief Minister of Sindh (CM) Murad Ali Shah to resolve issues of entire province including Karachi. The development came after Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered National Disaster Management Authority to clean all the drains and nullahs in Karachi, remove encroachments and submit report to it within three months in this regard.
A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Gulzar Ahmed heard the case pertaining to encroachments on drains and nullahs in the city at Karachi Registry on Wednesday.
The court expressed dismay over report presented by Commissioner Karachi with respect to removal of encroachments on nullahs and drains.
