In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid Srinagar has expressed serious concern over the continued house detention of its chief, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

The Anjuman in a statement in Srinagar said that the Mirwaiz, who had been under house arrest for more than three and a half years, was barred from offering Juma prayer for the 183rd consecutive week, today, which is extremely condemnable.

The Anjuman said that today, in his Friday sermon at the historic Central Jamia Masjid Srinagar, Imam Hai Maulana Ahmad Saeed Naqshbandi, urged the authorities to release Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on the occasion of Shab-e-Baraat as the holy month of Ramadan is also approaching so that he can fulfill his responsibilities towards the people.

The statement said that a large number of men and women from cities and towns who had come to offer Friday prayers and listen to Mirwaiz’s sermon expressing their anger against the behaviour of the authorities. They strongly protested against the continued detention of Mirwaiz, which they termed as “extremely dictatorial”, it added.—KMS
