Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi, embarked on a tour of the district south and east on the third day of Eid to evaluate the cleanliness situation and the effectiveness of cleanup efforts. Noting the absence of municipal staff in certain areas and observing subpar cleanliness standards at some locations in the southern district, he directed deputy commissioners to monitor and improve the situation. He emphasized the importance of administrative officers’ presence on the Solid Waste Management Board’s portal for monitoring staff attendance and performance.
Additionally, Naqvi instructed deputy commissioners to oversee sanitation work and take steps to enhance cleanliness in the city. During the visit, MD Solid Waste, Imtiyaz Ali Shah, briefed Naqvi on the sanitation system, with Deputy Commissioners South, Altaf Sarwar, and East, Alvi Sheikh, also in attendance.
Naqvi tasked deputy commissioners with overseeing sanitation efforts to enhance cleanliness and improve operations. In the southern district alone, 1,200 sanitation workers have been deployed, but due to Eid holidays, many were absent. Naqvi expressed dissatisfaction with the situation and instructed immediate action to address the issue. Following Naqvi’s directives during his visit, 511 absent sanitation workers were requisitioned for duty. Naqvi was informed that cleanup operations in the southern district saw 856 sanitation workers participating on the third day of Eid, with a total of 750 tons of waste collected from various garbage dumps in the district.
The Commissioner inspected areas affected by sanitation issues, including Empress Market, Garden, Soldier Bazaar, Lee Market, and Jamila Pumping Station, among others. He also reviewed cleanup efforts at sewage outlets caused by the malfunctioning of sewage lines near Garden Police Lines and Soul Defence Office. Naqvi directed priority measures to rectify the situation within two days. He further instructed the completion of sanitation work around light poles, nullahs, and sports complexes within three days. Naqvi stressed the need for daily waste collection from garbage dumps and its disposal at landfill sites to maintain cleanliness.
He pledged to visit all GTAs and landfill sites in the city to take necessary actions for improvement. Commissioner Karachi reiterated the imperative of enhancing the city’s sanitation system for better living conditions.
