LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz comes down hard on Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for pushing false narrative about alleged rape in a private college in Lahore.
Over two dozen students were injured in demonstrations, as thousands took to the streets after reports claimed that first year student was sexually assaulted by a security guard.
Days after the incident, CM Maryam Nawaz announced crackdown on individuals pushing propaganda about an alleged rape. The directive comes amidst ongoing student protests in various cities demanding justice for the purported crime.
Punjab government, senior officials of police and even parents of the girl denied rape incident. In a presser, CM Maryam urged action against those responsible for the misinformation, regardless of their political affiliations, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Chaudhry Pervez Elahi’s Q-League.
She said PTI incited protests and endangered the state, especially during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) moot.
A high-level committee established by the Punjab government has determined that the girl was not raped and that her injuries were sustained at home. In response to the misinformation, the police have filed a first information report (FIR) against those spreading unverified news on social media.
CM also trashed claims that CCTV footage of the incident had been removed, stating that the narrative was fabricated and lacked eyewitness accounts. She also instructed the education minister not to suspend the college’s registration, ensuring that no unjust actions are taken against anyone involved, while promising accountability for those responsible for the situation.
