THE arrest of drug peddler Riasat Ali by the Sindh Police sheds light on the pervasive criminal networks operating within Karachi. His alleged involvement as a major narcotics supplier underscores the urgent need to tackle criminal elements that endanger our society.

Riasat Ali’s confession reveals a daily narcotics trade worth millions of rupees. Such drug dealers pose a significant threat to public health, especially among the youth. The availability of illicit substances fuels addiction, violence, and social instability. It is imperative to recognize that Ali is not an isolated case; there are likely many more like him operating in the city. The proceeds from the narcotics trade are not only used for personal enrichment but also to finance other criminal activities. Weapons procurement, support for criminal elements, and funding of illegal enterprises are all consequences of this illicit trade. By apprehending drug dealers like Ali, we can disrupt this dangerous cycle and curb criminal activities. Karachi has witnessed a surge in street crimes. According to recent data, over ninety thousand street crimes incidents were reported last year. During the same period, one hundred and thirty four citizens also lost their lives whilst resisting robberies and hundreds were injured. Additionally, this year too the situation remains grim. In the first three months Karachi witnessed 22,627 street crime incidents with fifty nine losing their lives. Such crimes are not possible without black sheep within the police force. Faulty investigations, lax enforcement, and corruption allow criminals to evade justice. It is essential to expose and hold accountable these personnel who betray their duty. Karachi’s future hinges on our ability to dismantle criminal networks, apprehend drug dealers, and address street crimes. A coordinated effort involving law enforcement, community engagement, and public awareness campaigns is crucial in this regard.
