United States Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome praised the tombs of the historic Chowkundi cemetery, describing them as masterpieces of artistry and iconography. “The architectural arrangement of the tombs and the skill of their builders are commendable,” he stated during a visit to the cemetery with a delegation that included
Acting Consul General Jimmy Mauldin, Heather Murphy, Zahra Hajyani, Narendra Kumar, and others. Provincial Minister of Culture, Tourism, Antiquities, and Archives Sindh, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah, welcomed Ambassador Blome.
The delegation was briefed on the historical significance of Chowkundi Cemetery by Secretary Culture and Antiquities Khalid Chachar, MD Tourism Syed Fayyaz Shah, DG Antiquities Abdul Fatah Sheikh, and other officials. Ambassador Blome expressed his admiration for the impressive site and mentioned UNESCO’s willingness to collaborate in highlighting Chowkundi and other historical places in Sindh. He emphasized the strong, long-standing relations between Pakistan and the United States and called for enhanced tourism and cultural ties.
Additionally, he assured efforts to simplify the American visa process for tourists. Provincial Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah conveyed Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s vision of promoting Pakistan’s global image through Sindh’s tourism and cultural heritage. He highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at providing a favorable environment and facilities for tourists. As a gesture of goodwill, Minister Shah presented traditional Sindhi caps, ajrak, and replicas of Mohenjo-Daro artifacts to Ambassador Blome and his delegation, who also exchanged gifts.
