THE recent reports of intermittent clashes between Pakistan and Afghan Taliban forces along the Pak-Afghan border are deeply concerning, particularly in a region as volatile as this. Such instability poses a significant threat to the peace and security of both nations, exacerbating existing tensions and undermining efforts towards regional stability.

We have no doubt on the capabilities of our defence forces to defend the territorial sovereignty and integrity of the homeland as was also stated by Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch at her weekly news briefing on Friday. Indeed this has been proven by our forces time and again. However, it is crucial to recognize that border tensions serve neither Pakistan’s nor Afghanistan’s interests. Such a situation strain bilateral relations, hinder economic cooperation and create an environment ripe for extremist elements to thrive. Pakistan has repeatedly urged Afghanistan to prevent its soil from being used as a launch-pad for terrorist attacks against Pakistan, yet these calls have gone unheeded. The recent revelation by the Director-General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) regarding the plot to target Chinese engineers in Bisham, originating from Afghanistan, underscores the urgency of the situation. This incident not only highlights the immediate security threats but also exposes the broader challenge of terrorism emanating from Afghanistan—a concern echoed by international reports and neighbouring countries. The interim Afghan government bears a significant responsibility to address these security threats comprehensively. It must demonstrate a genuine commitment to combating terrorism. Collaborating with neighbouring countries, Afghanistan must adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorist organizations operating within its borders. Moreover, the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan further underscores the urgency of stability and security. The Afghan people have endured decades of conflict and any negligence towards addressing terrorist elements will only exacerbate their suffering. Time has come that the Afghan government takes decisive action against terror outfits and foster an environment conducive to peace and development.
