Terrorist groups backed and funded by India and its intelligence agency RAW continue to operate from Afghanistan. These groups pose threat not only to the peace and security of Afghanistan but also of neighbouring countries especially Pakistan which in recent days has witnessed a surge in acts of terrorism. TTP that has safe havens in Afghanistan has claimed responsibility of recent attacks in Pakistan including the one on Karachi Police Chief’s office.
The current situation warrants engaging with Afghanistan and extending a help to it to better cope with the terror threat. Pakistan has always forcefully raised voice for the war torn country at international platforms and at the Munich Security Conference also, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari urged the international community to help in capacity building of Afghan government to take on threat of terrorism.
At present, the interim Afghan government has no standing army, a counter terrorism force or even a border force. On the other hand, terrorist groups such as TTP are equipped with latest weapons. While Taliban government will have to show the resolve to counter these groups, simultaneously, it is important that Afghan authorities are helped to raise a full fledged army as well as Special Forces to deal with the scourge. Countries like Pakistan, the US, Russia and China can help the country train the security personnel.
As also pointed out by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, turning away from Afghanistan is not an option, as it will only further complicate the situation. Everybody must understand that peace and stability in Afghanistan is of paramount importance not only for Afghan people but also the region and the world at large. If terrorist groups were allowed to thrive on Afghan land, they will pose a serious danger to the world peace. Humanitarian crisis, drought and poverty will only breed terrorism. Hence, instead of resorting to sanctions, the policy of engagement must be pursued to lead Afghanistan in right direction.
