G-7 defence ministers’ meeting in Italy expressed concerns over intensification of violence in Lebanon and Gaza. However, these statements, like many before them, seem to reflect a pattern of diplomatic rhetoric devoid of meaningful action. The influential nations must move beyond mere words and take concrete steps to curb Israel’s unchecked aggression and genocide and provide justice to Palestinian and Lebanese peoples.

As Israeli forces continue their relentless bombardment of Gaza, the human toll is growing unbearable. The latest air strikes on Beit Lahiya, which have destroyed homes and caused numerous casualties, are only the most recent in a string of attacks that have left entire neighbourhoods in ruins and civilians desperate for safety.

Lebanon, too, now faces a similar threat, with Israeli strikes targeting areas near UN peacekeepers and further destabilising the region. The G-7’s concern over these escalations is understandable yet concern alone will not save lives. The situation calls for urgent and forceful action. Israel’s utter disregard for international law is evident.

The strikes that have targeted civilian homes, residential buildings and UN peacekeepers underscore urgent need for the world to call out these actions for what they are —violations of basic human rights and international conventions. For too long, Israel has acted with impunity, shielded by political and military support of powerful allies.

However, increasing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Lebanon demands that international community could no longer afford to turn a blind eye to appalling ground situation. Sanctions and other punitive measures are necessary to reign in Israeli leadership, which has consistently chosen force over dialogue and occupation over peace.
