ISLAMABAD – The newly-elected senators Tuesday took oath at the Parliament House amid protest by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Presiding Officer Senator Ishaq Dar administered the oath to the newly-elected members of the upper house of the parliament during the session summoned by President Asif Ali Zardari for the oath-taking ceremony and election of chairman and deputy chairman.

As the session began, the PTI lawmakers staged a protest, demanding adjournment of the session till the election of senators from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. PTI leader Ali Zafar said that election of Senate chairman and deputy chairman could not be held without the KP senators as the house is incomplete without them.

He also accused the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) of making controversial decisions.

However, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said the house is complete to conduct all constitutional processes, adding that nothing unconstitutional was happening today.

Candidates for Senate Chairman, Deputy Chairman Slot

PPP leader Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani is vying for the post of Senate chairman while PML-N’s Saidal Khan Nasir for the slot of deputy chairman.

Latest Party Position in Senate After Oath-Taking Ceremony

Following the oath-taking ceremony, the candidates of ruling coalition have the support of total 54 lawmakers. The number can reach to 62 if they are supported by the senators of MQM-P and JUI-F.
