ISLAMABAD – The remains of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, who succumbed to his illness on Sunday, are expected to be repatriated to his homeland today on Monday.
It was learnt that the body of the country’s last military ruler will be repatriated to a South Asian nation from the UAE in a special jet. His body was expected to arrive in Pakistan earlier in the day, however, there has been a delay.
Earlier in the day, the Pakistani embassy in the UAE issued a no NOC for his repatriation at the request of the family of the country’s four-star general. Sources claimed that Musharraf’s family members including wife Sehba Musharraf, son Bilal, and daughter Ayla will travel with the corpse.
As of now, the remains of the former COAS were kept in a UAE mortuary.
It is to be noted that the former premier will be buried in the port city of Karachi, his family members told local media.
The diplomatic officials announced that a special jet will land in Rawalpindi. Foreign Office spokesperson said that they were facilitating the repatriation process of the mortal remains of the former top general.
On Sunday, the former military ruler breathed his last in a private medical facility of a Dubai hospital. His death garnered condolences from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, his brother Nawaz Sharif, PTI Chief Imran Khan, as well as chief of army staff, and other top generals offered condolences over his death.
The controversial leader was living in a self-imposed exile in UAE since 2016, as he left his homeland after being tried under high treason. Known for his extreme moves, the former general seized power from Nawaz Sharif in a military coup back in 1999.
From the Kargil war to widespread human rights violations and civil-military rifts, his tenure was marred by a number of controversies.
