The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) participated in the proceedings of the 37th session of the Islamic Committee of the International Crescent held virtually in Amman, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on 16 April 2024, where the OIC side was headed by Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakhiet, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs. Ambassador Bakhiet delivered a speech in which he noted that the session took place at a time when Israel continued to escalate acts of genocide against the defenseless people of Palestine in Gaza, in a clear disregard for international law, human values, and divine laws, and when the occupation forces continue to impede the arrival of aid to the people of Gaza. He called for concerted efforts and initiatives across the Red Crescent societies in the Muslim world to contain the fallouts of the grave humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip.
The Assistant Secretary-General also explained that the session was held in the midst of serious humanitarian challenges facing the Muslim world in the form of natural disasters and other humanitarian crises caused by conflicts and wars. To alleviate the impact and various dimensions of these problems, he submitted that intensified effective efforts were required, together with the development of humanitarian action mechanisms to address the challenges and the continuous creation of partnerships with the humanitarian community.
On behalf of the OIC Secretary-General, MrHisseinBrahimTaha, Ambassador Bakhiet expressed heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for the kind initiative to host the session, and to all who made arrangements to ensure its success.
The session will continue until tomorrow, Wednesday, when the activities of the Islamic Committee of the International Crescent will be showcased.—PR
