NEW YORK – Indian-origin Muslim politician Zohran Mamdani has secured a major victory in the Democratic primary for the New York City mayoral race after beating former governor Andrew Cuomo in a closely contested election.
If successful in the general election, Mamdani would become the first Muslim mayor in New York City’s history.
According to US media reports, the polls closed at 9pm, with approximately 1.1 million voters participating in the primary. Mamdani received 43.5% of the vote while Cuomo garnered 36.4%.
Following his win, Mamdani stated, “It is an honor for me to run for mayor of New York as the Democratic Party’s nominee. This campaign is about giving a voice to communities that have too often been left behind.”
Zohran Mamdani, currently serving as a New York State Assembly member, is known for his progressive policies and grassroots activism. He has championed issues such as affordable housing, immigrant rights and criminal justice reform.
Mamdani, who has Democratic nomination now in hand, will advance to the general election later this year, where he will face the Republican nominee and potential independent candidates. His victory is a sign of a clear shift in New York’s political landscape and has energized a broad coalition of voters across the city.
