ISLAMABAD – A new spell of the monsoon system has entered Pakistan, with the likelihood of heavy rainfall across many regions of the country.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), this new wave of monsoon rains has begun affecting Punjab, with the potential for intense downpours in several districts, including the provincial capital Lahore.
In Lahore, after a day of extreme humidity and dry weather, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected late at night. The temperature in the city is forecast to range between 30°C (minimum) and 37°C (maximum).
The PMD has issued a warning stating that both light and heavy rains may occur across various parts of Punjab. The monsoon rain-bearing system re-entered Pakistan today, likely continuing a spell of strong winds and widespread rainfall in the coming days.
Meanwhile, residents have expressed concern over the slow pace of the Lahore Development Program, warning that if development work is not completed swiftly, citizens may face serious challenges during the monsoon season.
In view of the approaching Ashura (10th Muharram) and expected rainfall, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert. According to the PDMA spokesperson, heavy rains are predicted on 10th Muharram in multiple districts including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Sargodha, and Faisalabad.
Experts forecast that the current monsoon spell may continue until July 10, potentially causing a rise in water levels in rivers and streams.
In preparation for the expected conditions, the Rescue 1122 has been placed on high alert while the Disaster Response Force has been instructed to remain ready with all necessary equipment.
The public has been urged to follow precautionary measures and, in case of emergency, to immediately contact the PDMA Punjab helpline at 1129.
