WASHINGTON – The US House of Representatives has blocked an attempt to impeach President Donald Trump over launching military attacks on Iran without congressional approval.
A resolution for impeachment was introduced by Democratic Congressman Al Green from Texas, who accused the president of abuse of power. However, the House rejected the resolution with 344 votes against and 79 in favor.
Before the vote, Al Green stated, “I’m not happy to do this, but I’m doing it because no one person should have the authority to decide the fate of 300 million people.”
He further said that this issue is tied to the credibility of the Constitution, and if it is not taken seriously, its significance will diminish.
Green’s move came at a time when President Trump had launched attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities without consulting Congress. Although many Democrats expressed displeasure, the majority preferred to focus on other issues rather than impeachment.
Democratic Representative Pete Aguilar said, “We are currently working on the president’s proposed tax reform bill, and focusing on any other issue would be a ‘distraction.'”
Trump had previously faced impeachment twice — once in 2019 over withholding aid to Ukraine, and again in 2021 for inciting the Capitol Hill attack — but was acquitted by the Senate both times.
Al Green made it clear that he sees American democracy moving toward authoritarian rule, and that’s why he is taking this step — to let the public know that at least one member of Congress is monitoring these actions.
