ISLAMABAD – United States Ambassador Donald Blome called on Pakistan President Asif Zardari in his first meeting, and two sides shared views on key issues including fight against terrorism.
President Zardari engaged with Washington representative in the country as Asian nation saw uptick in terrorism attacks and tensions are running high between Islamabad and Kabul.
Acting US Mission Spokesperson Thomas Montgomery shared update on the closely watched meeting, saying President Zardari and Ambassador Blome discussed wide range of issues including bilateral relationship, US support for continued economic reforms, human rights and regional security.
US Ambassador also extended condolences to the President over the martyrdom of soldiers in Waziristan attack.
Donald Blome stressed importance of shared interests between both countries and further shed light to advance their common goals through high-level dialogues and Green Alliance framework.
President Asif Zardari also stressed long-standing relationship spanning over seven decades, calling for further strengthening of ties. He emphasized the need to boost trade and investment relations, inviting American enterprises to invest in the Pakistan Stock Exchange and bring innovative business ideas.
He also discussed mending the ailing economy, addressing economic and security challenges, and tackling climate change, highlighting Asian nation’s vulnerability to adverse impacts.
US Ambassador suggested collaboration in trade, investment, climate change, renewable energy, agriculture, and security. He also reaffirmed the completion of the Sindh Basic Education Programme by the US to strengthen Pakistan’s education sector.
The envoy also engaged with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, reaffirming Washington’s support for Islamabad’s prosperity and security.
