LAHORE – Pakistani theatre is mourning the sudden death of stage actor, comedian Asif Iqbal, who suffered a heart attack on Saturday.
Asif Iqbal, known to audiences as “Pheena,” died while getting medical help after a cardiac arrest. Family members said the performer suffered a heart attack and was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition, however, could not be stabilised, and he died despite medical efforts to save him.
The news of his sudden passing has deeply saddened fellow performers, entertainment figures and fans who had watched his work over a career spanning several decades.
Asif established much of his reputation in live theatre. The name “Pheena” became strongly associated with his stage identity. His performances were characterised by energetic acting, quick exchanges, comic situations and interaction with other performers.
His fellow actors, family and friend mourned his death, remembering golden time they spent with the comedian.
Only a few people know that Asif played cricket for WAPDA. His eventual move toward Lahore’s theatre industry changed the course of his professional life. He joined Tamaseel Theatre during the 1980s, initially handling responsibilities behind the scenes as a programme manager and assistant director. That experience gave him an understanding of theatre production before he eventually moved into acting.
His transition to the stage took place at Alflah Theatre, and he is reported to have made his acting debut around 1996.
His television credits included Syasi Theater on Express News and Hadd e Adab on 92 News in 2015. He subsequently appeared in Oouch on Lahore News in 2017 and Tanzo Maza on Suno News in 2022.
He was also invited to entertainment and comedy programmes, including Mazaq Raat. His credited film appearances include Run Mureed and No Tension, and Chal Mera Putt.
