ELECTION Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has urged electronic media outlets to refrain from broadcasting poll surveys, citing their potential to influence voters’ free choices. The ECP’s directive, outlined in a letter to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), underscores the importance of media adherence to the Code of Conduct for national media, particularly clause 12 that explicitly prohibits the airing of poll surveys.

Upholding the principles of free and fair elections requires a commitment from all stakeholders and the media is not an exception. Their commitment to unbiased reporting and responsible coverage is paramount in fostering a well-informed electorate. In the context of elections, the media serves as a conduit between political entities and the electorate. However, this influential role comes with a responsibility to adhere to ethical standards and electoral regulations. Upholding the principles outlined in the Code of Conduct will ensure that media outlets contribute positively to the democratic process rather than inadvertently influencing voter choices. Free, fair and transparent elections hinge on the ability of voters to make choices without undue external influence. Poll surveys, when aired, have the potential to sway public opinion, thereby compromising the essence of democratic decision-making. The prohibition of such surveys underlines the commitment to preserving the integrity of the electoral process and allowing the people to exercise their right to vote without external interference. Instead of engaging in activities that may disrupt the electoral process, media outlets should rather channel their efforts towards voter education. This involves creating programs that inform and educate diverse segments of the population, including women, transgenders, youths, minorities and differently-abled persons, about the significance of their vote. Such initiatives contribute to fostering an informed electorate, thereby ensuring maximum voter turnout and active participation in the electoral process. A key aspect of media responsibility during elections is the empowerment of marginalized groups. By focusing on educational programs tailored to these demographics, media outlets can amplify the voices of those traditionally underrepresented in the political landscape. This approach not only aligns with democratic principles but also fosters inclusivity and diversity in the electoral process.
