LAHORE – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former federal minister Hammad Azhar has been taken into custody, but police have yet to formally arrest him, the police sources said on Monday.
Police sources said several cases had been registered against Azhar in connection with the May 9 incidents and subsequent events. He was wanted by police in Lahore as well as in several other cities.
Police officials said they were reviewing the circumstances of Azhar’s detention and the legal status of the cases registered against him. The police are also examining the relevant legal procedures before formally recording his arrest.
The police said that the documents relating to the cases against the former federal minister are being prepared and would be submitted before the court.
His legal status would be determined in light of the available case records and judicial proceedings.
Azhar had remained out of public view since the May 9, 2023 incidents and had been wanted in connection with cases registered following the unrest.
He was reportedly arrested in Multan on Sunday and subsequently handed over to Lahore police.
The police are now reviewing the cases registered against him in different jurisdictions to determine the next legal course of action.
