Gujjarpura area of the metropolis, which has been in headlines due to the recent gangrape incident, is said to be a safe haven for the outlaws and the police have failed to maintain law and order in the locality, situate din the outskirts.
During a survey of the area and its surroundings on Tuesday, this correspondent learnt that people seeking anonymity, informed that several police torture cells have been unearthed in this area.
They claimed that the area remained notorious for these police torture cells where they would keep criminals without registration of any cases. People alleged that the area is a safe haven for the outlaws, where the police have failed to maintain law and order.
“Criminals with the connivance of black sheep in the police have turned this area into their hub, which is evident from the fact that former Gujjarpura Police SHO Raza Jaffri was removed from his post by the then CCPO Lahore over his failure in maintain law and order”, they elaborated.
Residents alleged that several torture cells being run by police have also been found. The police record also shows that there are several First Information Reports (FIRs) of drug-peddling and dacoities registered in the area.
Sources revealed that some police officers and the influential personalities of the area in the past were patronizing rapists gang, which was a well-founded fact and everyone was aware of this fact. People alleged that the incumbent Gujjarpura Police Station Head Officer (SHO) Shahzeb has failed to control the law and order situation in the area, adding that the current SHO has been served several show-cause notices by the high-ups of the police department over his alleged poor performance.
Sources in the Police Department, requesting not to be named, divulged that due to poor record, SHO Shahzeb has failed to get promotion from the last 15 years.
They said that whatever the reason be, the police high-ups also remained spectators to the activities of the gangsters in the area in the past, adding that the police would have to do hard work in the area to reign in the criminals and shatter their hegemony by restoring confidence of the common man.
It is to be noted that it was the area of Gujjarpura, where a woman was brutally gang-raped in front of her children after her car ran out of fuel at Lahore-Sialkot Motorway last week.
