RIYADH – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in Saudi Arabia for a crucial three-day official visit at a time when regional tensions are intensifying, with discussions expected to focus on strengthening economic ties, expanding investment cooperation and addressing major geopolitical challenges.
During his stay, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will perform Umrah and will also visit Madinah to pay respects at Roza-e-Rasool (PBUH).
Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said the visit from August 6 to August 8 carries special importance as Pakistan continues diplomatic engagement with regional and Islamic countries.
The premier reached Jeddah at invitation from Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. He was welcomed by Makkah Deputy Governor Prince Saud bin Mishal. A high-powered Pakistani delegation accompanied Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, including Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi.
The highlight of the visit will be Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, where both leaders are expected to review the future direction of Pakistan-Saudi relations.
Foreign Office has described the visit as highly significant, saying it will provide fresh momentum to the decades-old strategic partnership between Islamabad and Riyadh.
Amid growing concerns over tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, Pakistan has reiterated its efforts to support diplomatic solutions.
The Foreign Office spokesperson said Islamabad is actively working to play a mediatory role, adding that any agreement related to the strategic maritime route would be of “great importance.”
Pakistan also praised Oman’s diplomatic efforts, expressing hope that continued negotiations could help resolve outstanding issues.
