Government College University Faisalabad is making news online as a routine review of exam records turned into major cyber scandal after officials uncovered signs of alleged result tampering.
It started with mismatched marks, which now triggered FIA investigation into claims that hackers breached the university’s system, altered students’ results, and may have taken money in exchange for boosting grades.
As per university officials, the attackers gained unauthorized access to teachers’ online portals and allegedly changed results of 32 students across 72 courses, raising serious concerns over the security of the institution’s digital examination system.
The suspected manipulation came to light when the Controller of Examinations discovered discrepancies between manually maintained records and the marks available on the university’s online portal. Following the discovery, the university immediately withheld the affected results to prevent the release of incorrect academic records.
The varsity administration formally approached Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Wing, seeking a comprehensive investigation into what appears to be a well-planned cyber intrusion.
GCU university alleged that unidentified individuals were not only hacking the system but were also reportedly collecting money from students in exchange for illegally increasing their marks. Officials further claimed that several teachers’ faculty portals were accessed repeatedly from the same IP address on multiple dates, suggesting a coordinated attempt to compromise the university’s examination database.
Despite alleged breach, university authorities said the verification process detected the irregularities before any fraudulent academic documents could be issued. Officials maintained that no fake Detailed Marks Certificate (DMC) based on the manipulated results was released, adding that the integrity of the official record was ultimately preserved.
FIA Cyber Crime Wing is expected to investigate the source of the unauthorized access, trace those involved, and determine whether the alleged marks-for-money network extended beyond the identified cases.

Another major controversy dates back to 90s, when Punjab University Examination Branch employee allegedly tampered with official award lists and examination records to convert failed students into successful candidates. The dispute later became the subject of court proceedings.
More recently, 2026 Cambridge A-Level paper leak sparked huge concern after examination papers reportedly surfaced online before the scheduled tests. Although that case involved leaked question papers rather than altered grades, it triggered cybercrime investigations and renewed debate over the security of examination systems.
