ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared views on wide range of bilateral, regional, and global issues in what officials described as a warm and constructive exchange.
During call, the premier extended his best wishes to US President Donald Trump, praising his bold leadership and appreciating Secretary Rubio’s efforts in helping mediate a ceasefire understanding between Pakistan and India. The Prime Minister noted that the agreement had averted a potential crisis between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
He also welcomed President Trump’s recent positive remarks about Pakistan, describing them as encouraging for long-term peace in South Asia. Reiterating Islamabad’s commitment to peace, the Prime Minister expressed readiness to engage in meaningful dialogue with India on key issues including Jammu and Kashmir, the Indus Waters Treaty, trade, and counter-terrorism.
Sharif and Rubio discussed the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the urgent need for diplomatic solutions and expressed Pakistan’s willingness to contribute constructively to peace efforts in the Middle East, citing the broader global implications of the crisis.
On the economic front, Prime Minister Sharif underlined the importance of enhancing U.S.-Pakistan cooperation in various sectors such as trade, investment, energy, mining, rare earth minerals, and information technology. He stressed the need to convert shared economic goals into tangible results.
Addressing security concerns, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm resolve to eliminate terrorism and highlighted the threats posed by groups such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Secretary Rubio acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts in counter-terrorism and assured continued U.S. support in dealing with such threats.
The premier also expressed satisfaction over the recent meeting between President Trump and Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, in Washington, calling it both cordial and productive.
The two sides agreed to translate their discussions into practical steps for cooperation across multiple fields. Emphasizing the need for continued high-level exchanges, the Prime Minister renewed his invitation to President Trump for an official visit to Pakistan and extended a separate invitation to Secretary Rubio.
In response, Secretary Rubio thanked PM for call and reaffirmed the US commitment to strengthening ties with Pakistan.
