Pakistan has condemned the demolition of a century-old mosque in India’s Uttar Pradesh, calling it a reprehensible assault on a historic Islamic place of worship.
In a statement responding to media queries, Foreign Office Spokesperson Ambassador Sajjad Haider Khan said the demolition reflected a wider “Islamophobic and Hindutva-driven campaign” targeting Islamic heritage.
Indian media reported that the mosque was demolished by Uttar Pradesh authorities in the early hours of September 5, with a heavy police presence deployed at the site.
The FO spokesperson said the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992 continued to represent an ideology marked by religious intolerance, prejudice and hatred.
Pakistan urged the international community to take immediate notice of the systematic persecution of Muslims in India and the state-backed destruction and desecration of Muslim places of worship.
The Foreign Office also called for accountability of Indian authorities over actions that undermine the religious freedoms and cultural heritage of minorities, particularly Muslims.
