Resident of Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) has lodged a fresh case against her neighbours and police officials, accusing them of assault during a dispute outside their apartment last month.
The development followed the circulation of CCTV footage on social media showing a confrontation at a DHA Phase 6 apartment building.
The footage showed police personnel restraining a woman while another woman assaulted her with a dumbbell.
Initially, an FIR was registered against the woman who was assaulted and her brother. However, a subsequent inquiry found that the allegations were not supported by the evidence and recommended departmental action against the police officials involved. It also called for the first FIR to be disposed of.
A second FIR was subsequently registered at Darakhshan police station on September 5. According to the complainant, the incident occurred around 11:45pm on August 20 when a police officer came to her apartment and told her that a neighbour wanted her and her family to come downstairs.
She alleged that the neighbour later came to her apartment, verbally abused her, dragged her by the hair and snatched her mobile phone. She further claimed that the woman assaulted her mother when she intervened.
The complainant alleged that the neighbour returned with her daughter and police officials, following which the daughter struck her and her family members with a dumbbell.
She said her family took refuge inside the apartment and called the police, but alleged that officers damaged the building’s CCTV camera and later entered the residence and took away her and her brother’s mobile phones.
The complainant requested legal action over the alleged assault, theft of mobile phones and damage to the security camera.
