ISLAMABAD – The opposition on Monday lashed out at the government for “criminal negligence” in handling the events that caused the death of 23 tourists in Murree after their cars were trapped on roads due to heavy snowfall.
The opposition has jointly demanded the formation of a judicial commission into the incident in order to pin blame on those who showed negligence.
Addressing the National Assembly session, Leader of the Opposition and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif said that thousands of tourists remain stranded for 20 hours but no official came to help them in the tough situation.
“Whether it was a natural calamity or manslaughter,” he questioned, adding: “Why influx of such a huge number of tourist to Murree went unmonitored when the Met Office has made predictions in this regard”.
He said that the government should resign if it was unable to administer the things.
He demanded a judicial commission to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to task, adding that a committee of government officials carries no credibility..
Responding to Shehbaz Sharif, Information Minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain said that when the PTI leaders were helping people in Murree, former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was busy in hold a presser in Islamabad.
He recalled that the Model Town incident happened during the tenure of PML-N when a number of people were killed by policemen.
