THE latest move by Israel to advance bills calling for the annexation of the occupied West Bank has once again exposed its expansionist ambitions and complete disregard for international law.
The plan has drawn widespread condemnation from across the Muslim world. The United States has distanced itself from the proposal with President Donald Trump dismissing the move.
Meanwhile, conditions on the ground in the West Bank continue to deteriorate at an alarming rate. According to Jan Egeland, head of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Israeli settler violence often aided by the authorities is driving Palestinians from their homes across the occupied territory. These are not isolated incidents but they represent a systematic campaign of displacement and oppression aimed at erasing Palestinian presence from their own land. The international community can no longer turn a blind eye to these atrocities. Israel must be reined in and held accountable for its repeated violations of international law and human rights. Silence or inaction only emboldens the aggressor and deepens the suffering of the innocent. The West, particularly those nations that speak of democracy and justice, must match their words with deeds and ensure that Israel’s unlawful expansion is stopped through diplomatic, legal and economic measures. Peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved through occupation, annexation or apartheid. It can only come through justice, equality and the recognition of the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to live freely on their own land. The world must act before Israel’s expansionist designs extinguish the last remaining hope for peace.
