THE federal government has decided to impose a ban on the religio-political party Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) following recent violent protests that disrupted public life and led to loss of lives and property.
Acting on the recommendation of the Punjab government, the federal cabinet approved the ban unanimously, citing reports of the party’s involvement in violent activities.
As per constitutional procedure, the matter will now be referred to the Supreme Court, which holds the final authority to decide the legality and permanence of such a ban. This judicial oversight is crucial to ensure that the decision stands on firm legal ground and that due process is fully observed. It will provide an opportunity to the TLP to put its stance across. While the government’s decision stems from concerns over violent protests and breaches of peace, it is equally important that this action is not perceived as a move against any religious or ideological group. The government must, therefore, communicate clearly that the decision pertains solely to issues of law and order, not to matters of religious views. As government representatives, including Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah and Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, have clarified, the state’s objection is not to the TLP’s religious stance but to the acts of violence associated with some of its protests. Indeed, no one can be permitted to endanger lives, damage property or challenge the writ of the state under the guise of political or religious expression. Peaceful protest is a democratic right, but violence is not. At the same time the line between maintaining order and respecting political freedoms must remain clear and carefully upheld. The government must safeguard peace without compromising democratic freedoms and political and religious groups must pursue their causes within the bounds of law. Only through mutual restraint, dialogue and adherence to constitutional principles can Pakistan maintain harmony and uphold its democratic ideals.
