Roshan economy package

PRIME Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement of Roshan Economy Electricity Package marks a decisive and forward-looking step toward revitalizing the economy.

The three-year relief initiative stretching from November 2025 to October 2028 seeks to inject new life into the country’s industrial and agricultural sectors through concessional electricity rates. This package offers a ray of hope for long-term economic stability.

Under the plan, industrial consumers who currently pay Rs34 per unit and agricultural consumers paying Rs38 per unit will now receive additional units at a substantially reduced rate of Rs22.98 per unit. This relief will enable factories and farms alike to expand output, reduce operational costs and strengthen the country’s export potential. The initiative is rightly being hailed as a potential game-changer. By lowering one of the biggest input costs, it will help industries regain their footing, encourage investment and stimulate job creation. Similarly, cheaper electricity for the agricultural sector will directly improve productivity, reduce costs for farmers and enhance food security. These are not isolated benefits but they will have ripple effects throughout the economy. As industries and agriculture thrive, our export base — which has remained stagnant for many years — will expand, bringing in much-needed foreign exchange and reducing dependence on external borrowing. This is the path toward true self-reliance. The Package embodies a vision of growth through empowerment of giving our productive sectors the means to compete regionally and globally. It signals a shift from short-term fixes to long-term planning, from dependency to self-sufficiency. Indeed such incentives could set us firmly on the road to industrial expansion agricultural advancement and sustainable economic progress. However, while this package is a bold and commendable step for producers, the government must not lose sight of the plight of domestic consumers. The current electricity tariffs for households remain painfully high and beyond the reach of the common man. Inflation has already stretched families to the limit. A comprehensive relief plan for domestic users, especially low and middle-income households, should accompany industrial and agricultural reforms. Only then will the benefits of economic revival be felt across all segments of society. In essence, the light that shines from Roshan Economy Package must illuminate every corner of our economy from factories and farms to the homes of common man.
