ACCORDING to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Pakistan has achieved another milestone by unveiling 6 Gigahertz (GHz) spectrum band for unlicensed operation for RLAN (Radio Local Area Networks) — also called Wi-Fi 6E. With the unlocking of this band, Pakistan has become the 10th country in Asia Pacific to embrace 6GHz for Wi-Fi. Currently, only 60 countries worldwide have unlocked 6GHZ (full or partial) for RLAN (Wi-Fi) services.

Wi-Fi 6E is a new generation of Wi-Fi with faster speeds, lower latency, more security, higher capacity and less interference. It is useful for high-bandwidth applications like high definition video streaming, virtual reality and online gaming. Introduction of this latest technology is, indeed, an achievement and Chairman PTA Major-General (Retd) Hafeezur Rehman has a point in taking pride as its roll out has positioned Pakistan as a regional frontrunner in embracing next generation Wi-Fi technology as this would surely give a boost to the IT and telecom sector in the country. While acknowledging the role of the PTA and other stakeholders in making efforts to keep pace with the rest of the world as far as technological advances in the sector are concerned, we would urge the authority to play its role in stemming the rot in the cellular services. With the passage of time both call and data services of different cellular companies have deteriorated to worrisome extent and the routine exercise of carrying out quality of service surveys has failed to make the desired impact.
