NATIONAL Assembly passed a resolution on Friday, condemning the United States House of Representatives’ resolution demanding a probe into alleged irregularities in Pakistan’s general election. This resolution, tabled by the PML-N lawmaker Shaista Pervaiz Malik, was a timely action and rightly emphasized the country’s sovereignty and independence.

It is no secret that the US has a long history of commenting on and interfering in the internal matters of other countries. This habit, under the guise of promoting democracy and human rights, often undermines the very principles it claims to uphold. The US House Resolution 901, calling for a “full and independent investigation of claims of interference or irregularities” in February 8 polls, is another example of such unwarranted interference. Pakistan, as a sovereign nation, has every right to manage its internal affairs without external meddling. There may be some concerns within the country regarding the recently held general election. However, it is imperative that these matters are resolved internally, through established legal and procedural channels. Election tribunals are already hearing cases where candidates have reservations about the election results. This process is a testament to addressing electoral grievances within the framework of its own laws and institutions.

Instead of fixating on Pakistan, it would be more appropriate for the United States to focus on pressing issues where its intervention could be more meaningful. The situation in Gaza, where thousands of Palestinians have been killed, demands urgent attention. Similarly, the plight of Muslims in India under Modi’s regime, who face daily persecution, is a grave human rights concern. The ongoing situation in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, where people have been waiting for the right of self-determination for over seven decades, also requires a sincere response from the international community. If the US parliamentarians are truly committed to the indiscriminate application of human rights, they should prioritize these pressing issues. The time has come for Western capitals to abandon their double standards and advocate honestly for justice and human rights worldwide.
