The government’s decision to convene a Multi-Party Conference (MPC) to discuss the proposed military operation ‘Azm-i-Istehkam’ is a significant step towards fostering national unity and consensus on critical security matters. The participation of Imran Khan and his party, the PTI, in this conference is a welcome development, reflecting a much-needed thaw in the political landscape. This consensus-building initiative is vital to ensuring the successful elimination of terrorism and extremism

The Corps Commanders’ conference at its meeting on Friday very rightly voiced concerns over the unwarranted criticism and deliberate misrepresentation of Operation Azm-i-Istehkam by certain quarters. This operation, approved by the Central Apex Committee on National Action Plan, aims to address the resurgence of terrorism through a comprehensive approach leveraging the full spectrum of national power. Given the recent surge in terrorist activities, it is imperative that the nation presents a united front to counter these threats effectively. The political firestorm that followed the announcement of the operation highlighted the need for inclusive consultation. By bringing together all political parties through the MPC, the government is taking a crucial step towards addressing the concerns. The PTI’s decision to participate in the MPC should be applauded. This decision echoes the unity and harmony witnessed in the aftermath of the tragic APS incident, a time when the nation stood together against a common enemy. Such solidarity is essential to delivering a decisive blow to terrorists and ensuring the safety and security of our people. Furthermore, the MPC could serve as a starting point for political stability, which has eluded the country for the past two years. The challenges facing Pakistan are multifaceted, encompassing both security and economic dimensions. It is incumbent upon political parties, whether in government or opposition, to demonstrate maturity and flexibility in addressing these challenges. The MPC will also send a positive message to the international community about Pakistan’s resolve and determination to resolve internal issues through unity and dialogue.
