Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman strongly condemned the torture on the MPA from Lyari — Syed Abdul Rasheed — for exposing massive corruption in Lyari General Hospital and Nursing College as well as Benazir Bhutto Medical College.
The JI leader was addressing a press conference along with the MPA and other JIleaders at JI Karachi headquarters, here on Wednesday. Sindh Assembly Works and Services Committee Chairman Syed Abdul Rasheed — a JI leader and representative of the people of Lyari on the floor of the provincial assembly — also addressed the presser and shared his ordeal with the media.
Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, on the occasion, demanded of the authorities to file the first information report of the heinous act and take action against all those involved. He also demanded of the authorities to take strict action against the corrupt elements and their patrons.
Highlighting a very strange aspect of the incident and the following series of events, theJI leader said that the FIR was not registered despite the orders by the Inspector General of Police, Sindh and speaker of the Sindh Assembly. Who is sheltering the corrupt mafia in the government sector? Are the forces behind the corruption mafia more powerful than the law and authorities?, he asked and put question marks on the writ of the government and the state.
Syed Abdul Rasheed, being the chairman of the committee and representative of the people in Lyari, is the rightful person to have access to the concerned information and is supposed to play his due role to remove problems in the due process for the people of his constituency, he said.
Engr Naeemur Rehman further said that the MPA was targeted, kept in unlawful detention and tortured in the presence of police and other governmental officials for exposing corruption and corrupt officials in the college.
Corruption and corrupt officials are being supported and sheltered in the Sindh government by the powers within the PPP, he said. The JI leader further said that the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) and the Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi have been ruined by the corruption and mismanagement on part of the PPP government in Sindh.
The public sector hospitals lack essential facilities and medicines, whereas the Sindh government takes shelter behind the nongovernmental organizations, declaring their contribution as its own progress in order to plunder the taxpayers’ money and mislead masses in the province.
In addition, he said, the PPP regime in Sindh doesn’t want to lose it’s reign over the KMC hospitals, including Sobharaj, Sarfaraz Raffiqui and Abbasi hospitals. All the public sector hospitals, looked over by the Sindh government are in shambles, he added. Engr Naeemur Rehman said that the government talks about upgrading the Karachi Medical and Dentist College to university, whereas on the ground the KMDC was facing issues of salaries and pension.
He said that the JI has completed it’s working on the public health sector and will announce it’s future course of action.
