Sindh government has intensified efforts to launch its electric vehicle (EV) taxi service, with a directive to expedite the establishment of EV charging stations.

In a high-level meeting chaired by Senior Minister for Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon and Provincial Minister for Energy and Planning Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, the focus was on operational readiness and launching the first batch of EV taxis by February. The meeting, held at the Sindh Secretariat, was attended by key officials, including Secretary Planning and Development Najam Shah, Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Kamal Dayo, and People’s Bus Service Project Director Sohaib Shafiq. Officials briefed the ministers on the benefits and affordability of the EV taxis, emphasizing that passengers would be able to travel up to 200 km for Rs. 1,800.

The initiative is designed to be both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stressed the need for timely completion of infrastructure, including EV charging stations, to ensure the service launches without delay. “This initiative reflects our vision for a modern and sustainable transport system,” he said. He added that the EV taxi service would create employment opportunities, reduce environmental pollution, and attract investment in Sindh’s transport sector.

Provincial Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah reiterated the government’s commitment to establishing a comprehensive EV ecosystem, including charging infrastructure and financing models. He highlighted plans to collaborate with banks to provide EV taxis to unemployed youth on easy installment plans, aligning with the Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) vision of empowering individuals and promoting self-reliance.

The meeting also reviewed banking models to ensure accessibility and affordability of EV taxis, providing unemployed youth with opportunities to own and operate vehicles. The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to transforming Sindh’s transportation landscape through this eco-friendly initiative.
