The Islamabad High Court on Friday disposed of a plea filed against the arrest of Baloch protesters.
During the hearing, Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb said, “The court does not want such a situation which leads to further ‘action’ against the protesters because of us.”
Lawyer Atta Kundi said: “I am thankful to the administration that they kept their words and released all the arrested Baloch protesters. The administration has released 34 Baloch protesters on the court’s order. In the current situation, the only ray of hope in the country is the courts.”
The IHC judge remarked, “Are the courts a ray of hope? No, I don’t know.” Lawyer Atta Kundi said that the difference in change of heart by the government is the result of the implementation of the law, adding the court should look at the illegal actions taken by police against the protesters.
The judge said, “The court does not want to contribute to creating a situation that leads to crackdown against the protesters.” The judge added “We pray and hope that everything will be better now.” The lawyer said that the administration should apologise for keeping Baloch women under arrest for 24 hours. “The administration should explain why Baloch women were arrested,” Kundi added.
“The good thing is that all the arrested people were released,” lawyer Atta Kundi said, adding the police should be warned against such illegal action in future.
The judge said: “If they (protesters) have been released, then it is good, we should expect good things.” “SSP Sahab, thank you for your cooperation with the court. Now it should be the same in future too,” he expressed the hope.
