Govt committed to protect rights of persons with disabilities: Shireen

Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr. Shireen M. Mazari on Tuesday said that the government is committed for protecting the rights of persons with disability in Pakistan. The ICT Rights of Persons with Disability Bill has been submitted to the Parliament for approval.
Moreover, the Minister Human Rights said that public universities, the CDA and the State Bank have been requested to facilitate the needs of differently-able persons including: subsidies for education, special access for public buildings, and ATM facilities for the visually impaired.
In her key note address on the eve of celebrations of international day for the persons with disabilities organized by Directorate General of Special Education, Ministry of Human Rights at PNCA Islamabad, Dr. Shireen Mazari stressed that the Ministry of Human Rights also aims to strengthen coordination and cooperation between relevant stakeholders for the collection of data on disability in the country.
She assured that the Accessibility Code for the disabled persons will be adopted in all the buildings of Pakistan for their ease in access and also paid homage to the parents of children with disabilities who bring up their children despite all difficulties.
Director General of Special Education Mr. Sheikh Azhar Sajjad also addressed at this occasion and highlighted the contributions of DGSE over the years. The event was well attended with over 500 participants which included a large number of higher dignitaries, civil society, NGOs and INGOs representatives and parents of PWDs.
The Directorate General of Special Education (DGSE) is engaged in imparting Education, Medical, Para Medical and Rehabilitation Services to Children with Disabilities within the Federal Capital under the umbrella of M/o Ministry of Human Rights.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed across the globe, including Pakistan, 3rd December to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society, and to increase awareness about persons with disabilities belonging to political, social, economic and cultural spheres of life.
The Ministry of Human Rights, Directorate General of Special Education in collaboration with the Huqooq e Pakistan Project (a joint initiative of the European Union and the Ministry of Human rights), and other partner organizations working with persons with disabilities (e.g. Sightsavers, Chef International, Cbm and Deaf Talk) held an event to celebrate the day.
