MOSCOW – Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was allegedly poisoned, the international media reported on Friday.

Last month, the prior to the opposition forces’ capture of the Syrian capital, Damascus, in December, President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia with his family.

The Russia granted asylum to Assad and his family on humanitarian grounds.

However, the foreign media reports now claim that the deposed Syrian president was poisoned in Moscow in an attempt to assassinate him.

An online account named “General SVR” reported –believed to be operated by a former high-ranking Russian intelligence officer — Bashar al-Assad fell ill in Moscow on Sunday.

The 59-year-old former president sought medical assistance, complaining of severe coughing and difficulty in breathing.

The account further stated that there was an attempt to assassinate Bashar al-Assad.

He was treated at his apartment, and it is reported that his condition stabilized by Monday. Medical tests confirmed that he had been poisoned.

However, the “General SVR” account did not directly reference the sources of this information.

Meanwhile, the Russian government has not confirmed it yet.
