Federal Ombudsman Ejaz Ahmed Qureshi and Chief Secretary Sindh Syed AsifHyder Shah chaired a meeting on Thursday to discuss prison reforms, with a focus on enhancing facilities across Sindh. The meeting, attended by senior officials including Anwar Haider, Senior Advisor to the Ombudsman, highlighted key initiatives to improve the efficiency and conditions of correctional facilities. Chief Secretary Shah announced plans to implement audio and video link systems in all prisons, allowing inmates to participate in court proceedings and connect with their families remotely.
Additionally, 500 acres of land will be allocated for a new prison in Karachi, aiming to address overcrowding issues. The budget for providing quality food to prisoners has been doubled, emphasizing the commitment to their well-being. To ensure oversight and accountability, 22 oversight committees will be formed to monitor conditions in specific prison facilities.
Educational and vocational training programs will be extended to 2824 prisoners, with female inmates in Karachi Central Jail offered digital courses from platforms like Google and Amazon. Federal Ombudsman Qureshi praised Sindh’s progress in prison reforms, emphasizing the importance of continued efforts in line with directives from the Supreme Court.
