OUR country is blessed in many ways, and among the greatest assets is its youth. With over 60% of the population under the age of 30, the country is uniquely positioned to harness this demographic dividend to advance its social, political and economic spheres. However, to transform this potential into tangible progress, the right policies and targeted initiatives are crucial. The youth must be equipped with the necessary tools, opportunities and support to become the drivers of the nation’s future.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s acknowledgment of the importance of the youth, especially in connection with this year’s International Youth Day theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” highlights the critical intersection of technology and opportunity. This convergence presents a unique chance for young Pakistanis to not only transform their own lives but also contribute significantly to the country’s sustainable and equitable development. The Prime Minister’s Youth Programme stands as a testament to the positive impact that well-crafted policies can have. Launched in 2013, this initiative has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of young Pakistanis. Through the Youth Loan and Agricultural Scheme, approximately 186 billion rupees have been disbursed to over 280,000 young entrepreneurs, creating numerous job opportunities across the country. This program has not only empowered individuals but has also contributed to the broader economic landscape of Pakistan by fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. The announcement of an additional Rs100 billion allocation for the current financial year to expand this initiative is a welcome development. The Youth Programme’s holistic approach, which combines skill development, access to advanced technology through the Youth Laptop Scheme, and financial support, must continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of the youth. Our young population is increasingly connected to the global digital landscape, making it essential for the government and private sector to create pathways for digital literacy, innovation, and entrepreneurship. By leveraging technology for education, social activism, and economic empowerment, young Pakistanis can become catalysts for positive change in their communities and beyond.
