CDA’s decision to engage in the construction of bicycle lanes in the federal capital is a praiseworthy initiative that deserves commendation. According to its spokesperson, this project is anticipated to play a vital role in alleviating the traffic congestion on Islamabad’s roads. Notably, the initiative goes beyond traditional bicycle lanes, as the CDA intends to promote e-bike services and establish various stations for these bikes.

The primary objective of this project is to address two significant challenges simultaneously: reducing carbon emissions and promoting cycling in Islamabad. The spokesperson rightly highlights that a mere 2.73 percent of the population is above 65 years of age, implying that a substantial majority of the population is young enough to actively participate in and benefit from this initiative. The intended outcomes, including an increased uptake of cycling and a reduced reliance on cars, are integral to fostering a sustainable, eco-friendly, and equitable transportation system in the capital. This will not only contribute to reduced traffic congestion but also play a pivotal role in mitigating the adverse effects of air pollution, ultimately fostering a healthier and more sustainable urban environment. In recent days, we saw a serious decline in air quality of the capital. This deterioration surpassed even the levels recorded in other major cities like Lahore and Karachi. In this backdrop, the CDA’s initiatives such building bicycle lanes becomes even more critical. To effectively deal with the pressing issue of air pollution, the CDA must persist in implementing such proactive measures. Moreover, the success of the CDA’s initiative should serve as an inspiration for other major cities to follow the suit. The construction of bicycle lanes, coupled with the promotion of sustainable modes of transportation, can be a transformative step in addressing the issue of environmental degradation. The need for comprehensive strategies that prioritize green initiatives is need of the hour in the face of growing environmental challenges.
