A Full Scale Airport Emergency Exercise – 2023 was held on Tuesday at the Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport (JIAP). The aim was to test the response of all concerned agencies, should a mishap involving an aircraft happened at the airport. The mock exercise involved participation of fire and rescue departments and ambulances provided by Rescue 1122, Hilal e Ahmer, 115, Edhi and Life Care hospitals.

An Airbus aircraft was used for this emergency exercise which involved mock casualties with Triage area (Assembly point for critically injured) established to classify the causalities according to priority.

Upon receiving the emergency call, CAA fire tenders responded to the simulated scene of aircraft accident within 2 minutes and extinguished the fire within 1 minute by following procedures as laid down in the Crisis & Emergency Response Plan. Mock casualties were evacuated and transported in ambulances to the nearest hospitals.

These drills are conducted in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations, which mandate that all airports conduct a full-scale airport emergency drill every two years.
