ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s anti-graft watchdog National Accountability Bureau (NAB) withdrew its case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in Toshakhana.

The court transferred the case to a special judge in Central Islamabad in light of recent amendments to NAB laws, which a prosecutor argued meant the case no longer falls under the jurisdiction of the bureau.

The lawyer of Imran Khan contended that the case should be considered invalid, and former prime minister remains in custody due to ongoing charges linked to May 9 protests that erupted after his arrest at the Islamabad High Court. This development comes after former prime minister sought to have NAB cases against him dismissed following a Supreme Court ruling that upheld the recent amendments to NAB laws.

The country’s former prime minister remained behind bars since August last year after convictions in several cases, including two involving Toshakhana. Although his sentences in these cases were suspended and he was acquitted of a separate charge earlier this year, he continues to face legal challenges.

Earlier this year, Khan and his wife were re-arrested in connection with a new Toshakhana reference shortly after their acquittal in a different case.
