Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi’s 21-day Awami Theatre Festival is captivating audiences with its diverse and emotionally resonant performances. The festival has received an unprecedented response, with attendees standing to watch due to the overwhelming turnout. On weekends, double shows have been organized to accommodate the enthusiastic crowds. On the 16th day, the festival featured two contrasting plays: Dharay Ja Dhadaka in Memoni, directed by Aftab Kamdar, and Biwi, Batwa Aur Batwara in Urdu, directed by Rauf Lala. Dharay Ja Dhadaka explored the delicate dynamics within a small family, particularly the challenges between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. The story emphasized the importance of mutual respect and harmony among family members. Its stellar cast, including Salomi, Nazar Hussain, Shahbaz Sanam, and others, delivered memorable performances. Rauf Lala’s Biwi, Batwa Aur Batwara presented a humorous yet poignant tale of a middle-class family torn apart by a minor argument. The drama showcased the ripple effects of conflict and highlighted the value of reconciliation and family unity. The cast’s captivating performance was met with immense applause, leaving the audience deeply moved. On the 17th day, the festival continued to shine with Ali Roshan’s Sindhi play Na Farman and Nazar Hussain’s Misaq-e-Mohabbat. Na Farman portrayed the downfall of a rebellious son who falls prey to manipulation, aiming to sell his father’s property but meeting a tragic fate. The emotional narrative resonated deeply with the audience. Misaq-e-Mohabbat brought lighter moments with its comedic take on family sacrifices and reconciliation. It followed the journey of a man striving to reconnect with his loved ones after being forgotten post-retirement, underscoring the importance of family bonds. The festival, running successfully since its inception, continues to draw theater enthusiasts with its rich storytelling and powerful performances. From emotional tales of family struggles to lighthearted comedies, the plays are offering something for everyone.
