ISLAMABAD – In a worrisome development, judges of Islamabad High received suspicious letters containing inhalation anthrax.

The incident sparked concerns among Pakistan’s judicial community especially the timing of the incident triggered widespread controversies. IHC chief justice confirmed the incident, saying all judges received the letters, which were sent by an unknown woman.

When judges’ staffers opened letters, they found an unidentified powder inside, prompting quick action by capital force.

Officials are examining the letters and analyzing the biohazard powder. The letters further included a threatening message signed by a woman Resham, who is said to be wife of Waqar Hussain.

The apex court of federal capital summoned Inspector General (IGP) of Islamabad Police and the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Security to address the security breach.

What is Anthrax?

Anthrax is known serious sickness caused by bacterium Bacillus anthracis. The bacterium is found in soil and infects animals, with spores that can be turned into a toxic powder.

Its deadly for humans to come into contact with anthrax spores, typically through open wounds, inhalation, or ingestion.

Its active symptoms are not same on all people but humans can experience fever, chest pain, and difficulty breathing. It can be used as a biological weapon due to its ability to be grown in a lab, survive for long periods, and be spread in powders or sprays.

Quick medical attention is required while treatment can be done using antibiotics and antitoxins.
