How many more senators do democrats need to impeach Trump?

WASHINGTON – Democrats would need the support of at least 13 additional senators to reach the 67-vote threshold required to convict and remove US President Donald Trump through an impeachment process, according to media reports.

The 100-member US Senate requires a two-thirds majority, or 67 votes, for a president to be convicted following impeachment.

With Democrats holding 54 seats, even unanimous support from their own members would leave them 13 votes short of the required threshold.

A simple majority in the Senate would not be sufficient to remove the president, as impeachment involves separate constitutional and legal proceedings.

The political implications of the midterm elections could nevertheless create additional challenges for Trump, particularly if Democrats also secure control of the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, Trump has announced that he will accept the results of the US midterm elections, as early results indicate Democratic candidates are leading their Republican rivals.

Responding to the initial results, Trump said he would recognise the outcome, adding that he had not been on the ballot. He claimed that if his name had appeared, Republicans would have secured a significant victory.

The US president also acknowledged that the Iran conflict may have contributed to the Republican Party’s weaker performance. He suggested that voters might not have been willing to bear the short-term economic consequences of the conflict, particularly higher petrol prices.

Trump said he was prepared to work with Democrats and suggested that the two parties could find common ground on certain issues, including immigration.

However, he warned that he would veto proposals from Democrats if he considered them unacceptable.

The president also indicated that he did not expect to make changes to his cabinet.

US Midterm Elections 2026 Results

Democrats have secured 54 Senate seats against 44 for Republicans, gaining seven seats.

In the House of Representatives, Democrats are leading with 240 seats compared with 147 for Republicans, with the figures showing a gain of 30 seats for each party as reported.

While the Democratic gains could strengthen the party’s political position, securing the 67 Senate votes needed to convict and remove Trump would remain a significant challenge.
