Vice President JD Vance has attributed the Republican Party’s disappointing performance in the midterm elections to the Iran war, saying that the conflict played a decisive role in driving away voters who supported President Donald Trump in 2024.
In a lengthy post on X, he said the main reason behind the Republican losses was evident, adding that any serious assessment of the election outcome must begin with the war.
“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” he wrote.
Vance cited polling suggesting that many Trump’s 2024 voters had become dissatisfied with the administration and were considering voting for Democrats.
According to him, respondents who had shifted away from the Republicans identified four key factors that could bring them back: ending the war, addressing the rising cost of living and inflation, prioritising American interests, and reconsidering the country’s relationship with Israel.
Vance also endorsed what he described as political advice from television personality Rachel Campos-Duffy, who advocated a diplomatic solution to the Iran conflict.
Despite the electoral setback, he expressed confidence in the country’s future, urging dissatisfied voters to channel their frustration into supporting Republican candidates who share their political views.
Vance acknowledged that critics who had warned about the consequences of the administration’s policies had been justified, while calling on party supporters to learn from the results and refocus on their political priorities.
