Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Monem Zafar Khan has called upon the Sindh government to tackle the pressing challenges faced by Karachi’s citizens rather than simply taking credit for the city’s significant tax contributions. Addressing the press conference, Khan outlined the numerous problems afflicting Karachi, including persistent power outages, water shortages, rising gas prices, deteriorating transport infrastructure, and increasing street crime. He criticized the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for its 16 years of governance in Sindh, describing it as a period marked by mismanagement and inefficiency.
“Instead of claiming credit for Karachi’s status as the highest tax contributor in the country, the Chief Minister should focus on addressing the city’s urgent issues,” Khan stated. He highlighted that Karachi contributes over 90 percent of the province’s budget and declared that Jamaat-e-Islami’s movement for the rights of Karachi would persist, incorporating protests and legal actions. Khan demanded the reversal of the recent 53.5 percent increase in gas prices and the controversial seven-year dollar-based generation tariff imposed by K-Electric. He advocated for the cancellation of K-Electric’s license and called for a forensic audit of its operations, suggesting that Karachi should receive electricity directly from the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC).
He emphasized the need for residents to receive water directly from their taps instead of relying on water tankers and urged law enforcement agencies to enhance safety for citizens against armed robbers. Khan also raised concerns regarding the admission process for medical colleges, stating that thousands of students are suffering due to the Sindh government’s incompetence. He demanded transparency in the admission process, stringent action against those responsible for exam leaks, and an increase in examination centers for the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) to accommodate Karachi’s students.
