Meter reader suspended for conniving in electricity theft

The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has suspended a meter reader of GOR Sub-Division, who allegedly connived with two customers to temper with their electricity meters, thus inflicting an accumulative loss of Rs 2.3 million to the national exchequer, the company’s spokesman told media on Saturday. He added that on the special instructions of LESCO Chief Executive Officer Engineer Shahid Haider, strict action was being taken against the company’s officers and employees facilitating electricity thieves.The spokesman said that a special operation under the supervision of SDO GOR Sub-Division was conducted in Garhi Shahu where power meters were also checked apart from checking electricity pilferage from transmission lines. The team found that two consumers, Muhammad Shahzad and Muhammad Asim, were stealing electricity by tampering with the meters, and caused a loss of Rs 800,000 and Rs 1.5 million respectively to the national exchequer.
